Nancy Kaye (Hybben) Hoover, 82, of Mendota Heights, Minnesota, died peacefully on October 31, 2026.
Nancy was born March 5, 1944, in Clear Lake, Wisconsin, to Andrew and Kathryn (Peabody) Hybben. The oldest of eight children, she grew up on the family farm and attended a one-room country school. From the time she was very small she helped care for the seven brothers and sisters who followed. When Nancy was fourteen, the family moved to a farm near Connorsville, Wisconsin, and she graduated from Boyceville High School in 1962.
Two days after graduation, Nancy left home for St. Paul and took a job as a typist at the St. Paul Companies. A year later she met Kingsley Hoover of Stacy, Minnesota. They fell in love, married in 1964, and made their first home in Forest Lake, near Third Lake. Nancy was promoted to executive secretary and took real pride in her career, but she set it aside in 1973 to welcome the couple’s first and only child, their son, Justin.
Nancy and Kingsley divorced in 1980, and the years that followed were difficult ones. Nancy came through them by drawing closer to God and by building deep friendships with fellow Christians—friendships that would last the rest of her life. While Justin was young, she cleaned houses professionally, and she loved it—the messier the house, the better—because nothing pleased her more than making things “pretty and attractive” for people. She later returned to the insurance industry and held secretarial and administrative positions for more than fifteen years. Her favorite job was her last: main receptionist for the Forest Lake School District.
Nancy never shied away from hard work, and she especially loved being out in the yard—clearing up after a big storm, or getting everything just right before the first snowfall. She had a gift for writing and for decorating, and a deep compassion for children and for people in need. She disliked spending money on herself but delighted in giving it away, whether through her tithes and offerings or the gifts she so loved choosing for others.
In 2002, after twenty-two years apart, Nancy and Kingsley fell in love all over again and remarried. She joined him in Kent, Washington, where together they ran his business, Kings Original Kettle Korn, for fifteen years. In the summer of 2017, they retired and came home to Minnesota, settling into a townhome in Mendota Heights just a mile from Justin, Michele, and their granddaughter, Skye. These were some of Nancy’s most cherished years. She loved visiting with her neighbors, working in Justin and Michele’s yard, walking and looking after the family dog, Gabby, and being close again to her family in Wisconsin. Above all, she adored her time with Skye, with whom she shared a special bond.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Kathryn Hybben; her sister, Sandy Bodsberg; and her brother, Peter Hybben. She is survived by her loving husband, Kingsley; her son, Justin (Michele) Hoover; her granddaughter, Skye Hoover; her siblings, Andrew, Rondell, Terry, and Judy Hybben, and Melody Schmidt, and their spouses; and many nieces, nephews, and their families.
Nancy’s life will be celebrated with a service at 1 PM Saturday, November 7th with visitation beginning at 11:30 AM at Roberts Family Funeral Home, Forest Lake. Interment will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in North Branch, Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the American Lung Association.
