Dean answered the call to serve his country and did so proudly as a soldier in the Army, after his discharge he married his wife, Lois. He had a career with Cummins Diesel that spanned over 40 years. Dean’s passions led him to the outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing & snowmobiling. The most important aspects of Dean’s life were his strong faith, and the strong love he had for his family.

On behalf of the Forest Lake American Legion Post 225, we give thanks for Dean’s military service to our nation and to veterans as a long time Legion member.
Dean and Lois and their wonderful daughters, Laurie and Annette, rented from my parents for ten or more years in Forest Lake. My memories start with the day that they came to look at the house we had for rent and Dean was wearing patched blue jeans. Mom and Dad thought they were good reliable people based on the patched pants and other things. It started a friendship that as lasted for years. Our whole Daninger family has many great memories from knowing the Dietrich family. Growing up on a dairy farm, we never had much time to fish but Dean took me and my brothers fishing more than once. Dean loved to fish and he supplied my mother, Florence, with fish many times over the years. I remember how Dean used to whistle everywhere he went in the yard at the farm. Every Christmas eve, Dean and the girls would come out to the barn to visit while Santa magically managed to arrive at their home while Dean and the girls where visiting 🙂 I remember Dean could make a car or truck last 100’s of thousands of miles by oiling the interiors of the doors and fenders. I remember snowmobiling with Dean in Wisconsin where he and Lois grew up. When I used to fly airplanes, I remember taking them flying over Wisconsin to see their homes. Here is a link to photos of more memories.

I’m so sorry I will not be able to attend Dean’s funeral I”m in Roseau snowmobiling, one of Dean’s favorite things. I have many happy memories talking 4 wheelers and snowmobiles with him. My condolences to his family. Lee Sunsten.
