Vern Johnson, a proud 6-year United States Army Veteran. His time in the Army brought him from Fort Orde, CA to Fort Leonard Wood, MO, Germany, Vietnam and Malaysia. He enjoyed the experience he gained in the Army, and it shaped the trajectory of his future. Following the Army, Vern landed in Seattle WA, where he took advantage of the GI Bill and attended vocational school for mechanics. Vern enjoyed his career in mechanics, finding gratitude for the ability to make a decent living doing work he found fascinating. Following school, Vern was relocated to the Twin Cities, where he spent 17 years working in Roseville, MN. Vern suffered a stroke, and experienced complications that prompted his retirement. Vern moved through multiple nursing homes before landing in a Medical Foster Home, an opportunity to which he is eternally grateful. In this setting, Vern was blessed with a community that felt like family, loving support and companionship. Vern maintained a positive outlook on life, he was determined to make the most of any challenge he faced and overcome any obstacle in his way. He had a strong faith and a deep appreciation for the opportunities and people in his life.
A celebration of Vern’s life will be held at a later date.
On behalf of the Forest Lake American Legion Post 225, we give thanks for Vern’s military service to our country in the Army.
It was always a joy to visit with Vern. He was always very real and transparent with me. “What you see is what you get” kind of a guy. The last time I saw him, he reaffirmed his readiness to see the Lord. His faith was strong. No more debilitations! Enjoy your freedom! Will see you again, Vern!
