Robert A. "Butch" Culbertson

June 16, 1950 ~ November 16, 2022
Robert Allen Culbertson was born in 1950 to Albert and Millie Culbertson. He was the seventh child of eight children, and grew up in Lanesboro, MN. He was active in sports, especially baseball and football. In high school, he lettered in basketball, track, football, and baseball for all 4 years. He attended Rochester Community College for 2 years on a football scholarship. He was also an accomplished boxer with the Golden Gloves organization, eventually becoming the upper midwest heavyweight champion. He went to the Olympic tryouts for boxing in Arlington, Texas in 1972. In that same year, he married his first wife, Nancy, and had 2 sons; Adam and Jared.
Robert went on to work for the MN Department of Corrections at Oak Park Heights, and later at the Red Wing facility. He met Kathy in 1995 and they were married in 1996 at their farm in Star Prairie, WI. In 1997, they moved to Lanesboro after purchasing a historic home, which eventually became the Thompson House Bed & Breakfast. They ran a successful business there for 18 years, They also owned the Hawaiian Shaved Ice stand which was probably his favorite job. Rewards for games well played, end of school year celebrations, trivia quizzes for the kids and Halloween treats were all part of it.After retiring from these businesses, they moved to their house in Whalan and focused on their grandchildren and relaxing. In 2018, they moved to Columbus, MN to be closer to the youngest grandkids and help with their care. This brought Robert great joy. He passed peacefully at his home, on November 16, 2022 with his wife, Kathy, by his side.

Butch with his boys, Jared and Adam.❤️❤️
Butch and Kathy used to come to my house in Lanesboro for coffee. Kathy would bring homemade goodies and they were always delicious. We shared so many funny stories. Of course,, the stories were by Butch. He kept us in stitches. I loved my brother so much and I know he is at peace with others in my family that have passed. Love you Butch.
To the Culbertson family, our condolences and prayers. Clubber was one of a kind, a giant of a man, stronger then he knew…. Old farm boy strong!
Many many fond memories working with Butch at Oak Park Heights back in the 90’s on the Security Squad. He was an absolute character…. always upbeat, very very stubborn, always very respectful and professional.
In a battle, we all wanted Clubber on our side… I’ve heard stories and I’ve witnessed my own…. a big powerful fella…. fearless, best of all, one hell of a great guy!
He will be missed, his overstated belly chuckles, his sense of humor that sometimes only he thought was funny… but we’d laugh cuz he was laughing!
Take care Clubber….. we will miss ya!

Butch was always entertaining when he came to the restaurant. Just about every day I saw Butch. He loved the Broasted chicken and would have that a few times a week. Many times I would sit with him and chat. One of the best memories was when Butch would call the pay phone sitting across the street and we would watch the people look around and then go to the pay phone and think about if they should answer it. If they did, Butch would always have something funny to say to them. Butch would sit by the window at the restaurant looking at the pay phone across the street and do that quite often. What a laugh that was!
The guys in town would meet for coffee at 3:30pm and play cards, so a lot of times I would see him twice a day! Lots and lots of laughter and good memories.
My thoughts and prayers to Kathy, Adam, Jarod and family. I’m sorry for your loss.
Our deepest condolences, Alex, Megan, Gabe, Ethan, Lizzie, Jared, Lexi, Peighton, and kids.
Butch,
I am going to miss you so much. You know I love you with all my heart. We had so much fun together. I went to all your boxing matches. One time when you, Dad, Lefty, and I could not find a parking spot, a guy was taking two spots, so we picked up his car and moved it over. We had lots of fun when you were deer hunting and trapping raccoons.
Butch, if you wanted to do something you could do it. That is a Culbertson! I will be beside you in heaven and we will talk about our good times. It is a good thing Jesus got us tickets to heaven.
Love,
your sister,
Connie

I really enjoyed my time growing up and spending time with my uncle Butch and his family. I loved visiting them on the farm near Lansboro. Year after year we’d deer hunt in the woods and have a blast. Later I worked at Oak Park Heights with him for a short time. I will miss his sense of humor and his laugh. About a week before he passed I visited him in the hospital. Even though he was weak and looked worn out he was cracking jokes and would slowly laugh, “Ha.,ha,ha”. I’m glad I got to say goodbye for one last time and saw that he was at peace with his condition and with the short time he knew he had left.
I’m looking forward to seeing him again someday.
Butch my big, but little brother. I will miss you, but will see you in Heaven long with Mom, Dad, Lefty, Kay, Lolly and Allie.
Kerm and our son Eric enjoyed deer hunting on your farm outside of Lanesboro years ago.
Eric worked at Oak Park Heights Prison for a short time and enjoyed his Uncle Butch as a mentor there.
Butch was a very ambitious and very hard working man.
Your little, but older sister will miss you.
Could you tell Jesus Hi from me,
Your Loving sister,
Cookie
