Leon Nelson

September 24, 1943 ~ October 24, 2023
Age 80 of Appleton, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2023. Leon, known fondly to most as Spyder, was born to Ernest and Marion Nelson, on September 24, 1943, in Hutchinson, Minnesota. He was an avid gardener, nature enthusiast and sports fan. In the summers you would always find him wandering around the garden, planting, weeding, and tending. If there was a bird at the feeder, he’d know exactly the species. And, if there was a sports game being played that he was interested in, he’d be pacing around while watching, hoping not to somehow jinx the outcome with his viewing. He was a teacher, a career he truly loved. He joined the staff at the Appleton School District in 1965 and taught students there until he retired in 2000. Even after retirement, he substitute taught as much as he could as long as he was able – he thoroughly enjoyed his time in the classroom with students and with his fellow teachers.
Spyder is survived by his four children and their families; Kelly Biedny, her husband Steffan and grandchildren Alexander, Sophia and Jacquelyn; Danielle Kjar and her husband Steve; Becky Eisenbraun, her husband Jeff and grandchildren Skyler and Brodie; Michael Nelson, his wife Haley and grandchildren Molly and Greta. Leon was predeceased by his parents and sister, Ernest, Marion and Susan. The family will be holding a private remembrance of life at a later date. The family prefers that any donations be made to the cancer research organization of your choice in Leon’s honor. Any cards of condolence can be sent to the family to the attention of Becky Eisenbraun, 7416 Kay Dr, Blackhawk, SD 57718.
Spyder was one of my favorite teachers. He had such passion in the classroom…I still remember the whiffle ball for states and capitals…I also remember the Battle of Bunker Hill. When I traveled to the East Coast for a history your, his was the voice in my head. He truly was absolutely amazing. He is the reason I teach the way I do. He always challenged us to learn, and he made learning so inspiring. He will be greatly missed. His legacy of learning has inspired so many to go into teaching. Sending you all lots of love. ❤️
Where to start with memories of spyder…. He was a great loyal, friend and fun to be around. He made learning fun and challenging at the same time. He loved being around his “kids”. Noon hour would find him playing outside with the kids. Teaching the capitals would include throwing a ball around the classroom- catching it as well as knowing the answer!!
His classrooms in the ‘52 wing had tall doors for storage. Some people may remember “answering the phone” in the closets .
Teaching with him was a joy and having him as a friend was special. Marty Koosmann – elementary music and Community Ed director
