July 16, 1929 ~ November 27, 2022

Ingolf (Ing) Dahl, of Moorhead (most recently Forest Lake, MN), age 93, passed away Sunday, November 27, at his home surrounded by his wife and daughters. Ing was born to Iver and Christine Dahl in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan, and was the third of three children. At age 7, Ing and his family moved back to the family farm in Leksvik, Norway. They later moved to Northfield, Minnesota, where Ing finished high school. He enrolled at St. Olaf College and graduated in 1952 with degrees in Sociology and Economics. After marrying his college sweetheart, Mary Strom, the couple moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where Ing received a Master of Social Work degree from Washington University. Upon graduation, Ing worked for Lutheran Social Service in Minneapolis before moving to Moorhead in 1958 to begin work at the Fargo-Moorhead Psychiatric. In 1966, Ing began a long and rewarding career (30 years) at Concordia College in the Social Work Department. In 1968 he became the director and subsequently developed the program to accredited standing, started the Long-Term Care Administration/Social Service Program, and enjoyed leading students on many seminars to New York City and San Francisco. In addition to teaching, Ing maintained a private psychotherapy practice and served as a consultant to businesses, social services, and the American Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Ing and Mary raised their three children in Moorhead and were life-long members of Trinity Lutheran Church and Cormorant Lutheran Church. Ing taught his family the value of hard work, the importance of family, and the love of the outdoors with golf, tennis, ski-slopes and the lake cabin: fishing, sailing, cabin repair (sometimes up to building code), and even water-skiing while carrying the family daschund! Retirement included much international travel, Summers at the lake, and Winters in Arizona. Ing is survived by his wife of 70 years, his three children and their spouses: Doug and Lori Dahl, Diane Dahl-McCoy and Jamie McCoy, Karen and Doug Voss; and by six grandchildren: Paul, Jon, Erik, David, Maria, and Carolyn. Preceding Ing in death were his parents, his sister Signe Nelson, and brother Arnold Dahl. The family is very grateful for the professional and loving care given by the staff at Cherrywood/Amira Retirement Community. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 7th, 2023 at 11 AM at Hosanna Lutheran Church, 9200 Scandia Trail North, Forest Lake, MN 55025. Arrangements are being handled by Roberts Family Funeral Home, Forest Lake. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that gifts in Ing’s memory be directed to the “Ing Dahl Social Work Scholarship for Majors” at Concordia College, 901 8th St. S., Moorhead, MN 56562.
