Gwendolyne Amelia Hansen (Hagg)

April 12, 1937 ~ April 19, 2020
Gwendolyne Amelia Hansen (Hagg), Gwen, 83 of Forest Lake, Minnesota, passed away April 19th, 2020, of complications due to heart failure. She is preceded in death by her husband' Mark. Survived by her children, Jeffrey Hansen of Fairport, NY, Joel (Susan) Hansen of Lindstrom, MN, and Jessica (David) Carr of Maple Grove, MN; grandchildren, Kellisa, Josh and Britta (Jeffrey) and Ethan and Jack (Joel); sister-in-laws Janet Gilbertson of Austin, MN and Marie Hagg of Frankfurt, KY; many nieces and nephews, their spouses, children, great and great-great nieces and nephews all of whom made life fantastic, Gwen loved each and everyone of them.
Born in Dell Rapids, South Dakota on April 12, 1937 to Hilding and Esther Hagg she was the last surviving sibling following Violet, Joyce, JoAnne, Dallas, Doyle and Mercedes. Gwen survived Rheumatic Fever in her early years and would have a heart condition throughout her life because of it; she claimed her three years in bed led to her love of reading. She never let her heart condition slow her down, stop her from learning or serving others. During many doctor visits for cardiac issues, doctors would have their students listen in to Gwen’s perfect heart murmur. The doctors would ask if it was alright and Gwen would say, ‘best way to educate with a real live example.’
Valedictorian of her graduating High School Class she earned her degree at the University of South Dakota State in Vermillion where she met Mark Hansen. It could be noted that they both attended a Lutheran National Youth Gathering in California, prior to college over the same summer, although they say they did not meet. Her degree in General Education allowed her to teach K-12 any subject.
Married on August 15, 1959, she followed Mark on his completion of his ROTC requirements helping start GED programs at the army bases they would be stationed at. Upon honorable discharge, Mark accepted a position in Forest Lake, Minnesota as a high school art teacher. Without the guidance and a phone call from his sister, Gwendolyn Johnson (Bob) of Forest Lake, post Army service would not have brought Mark and Gwen to Forest Lake. Astonishingly, Gwen Johnson passed away not hours before Gwen Hansen in what has shocked both Johnsons and Hansens alike.
Gwen began teaching in the Forest Lake Area Schools in 1965 teaching whatever needed to be taught, History, Math and Biology were among her first full time classrooms. Eventually becoming the head of the Science Department in the High School and teaching mostly Chemistry until retirement in 1997. Sharing her passion for lifelong learning and advocating for students who may need a non-traditional approach to teaching and learning she began the local GED program in 1968 which she would continue participating and teaching with until after her retirement.
In 1968, she and Mark continued their education in Arizona at ASU both earning Master Degrees in Education. Instrumental in the fight for women's rights in the work place, Gwen was part of the class action suit which would bring about the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 which would lead to the Minnesota Parental Leave Act of 1987. As grievance chair person for the local teachers' union Gwen was often responsible for confronting discrimination within the work place. She definitely knew what the word ‘Balderdash’ meant.
Throughout all of her years teaching in the public sector she and Mark taught Sunday School, Confirmation Classes and led many Bible studies sharing her faith while helping others of all ages grow in their faith at Faith Lutheran Church in Forest Lake.
A member of the 2011 inaugural class of the Forest Lake Area Schools District Hall of Fame , Gwen will be remembered as a teacher, mentor and visionary in her roles on the Instructional Improvement Council, Educational Growth and Development Council and serving on the Community Scholarship Foundation. Upon retirement both Gwen and Mark worked diligently with the St. Paul Area Synod and Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to help create educational opportunities for teacher development in Tanzania. In 1998, they visited the school in Tanzania and shared instructional best practices with teachers. The columbarium and Memorial Prayer Garden at Faith Lutheran Church, where she will be inurned with her husband was the last project they worked on together.
Late January 2020, Gwen came down with the seasonal flu, she struggled to recuperate and her murmuring heart had difficulty recovering fully. Over the past three months she progressively dealt with greater and greater vascular dementia. The family would like to thank the staff at Cherrywood Pointe in Forest Lake, where she has been living the last few years, The Meadows of Fairview in Wyoming which helped her transition last summer and this winter, Birchwood Long Term Care in Forest Lake and Fairview Home Care and Hospice. The care Gwen has received has been outstanding and loving; all the caregivers have our gratitude and praise.
The family welcomes memorials to Cherish All Children, which is an effort to end human trafficking and the last issue Gwen took up with intent to solve, Forest Lake Community Scholarship Foundation or Faith Lutheran Church.
A Celebration of Gwen's Life 11 AM Friday, May 20th with visitation one hour prior at Faith Lutheran Church, 886 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. The service recording is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLxHxEj8R1s
‘When Science says it’s safe to gather again.’ Gwendolyne A. Hansen.
I am so sad to learn of Gwen’s death. I truly enjoyed getting to know Gwen and assisting the Faith Lutheran Memorial Garden Committee as the columbarium project was becoming a reality. Gwen, Rest In Peace my friend.
My deepfelt sympathy to the whole family! I just now learned of her passing. She sat with me in church after Mark died and always had so many stories to share. She was a wonderful friend and I have missed her by my side for a long time. Rest in peace my dear Gwen.
Gwen always made our bridge group so fun with her story telling way
We are so sorry for your loss. Gwen was an original, every conversation was memorable, entertaining, and always educational. She helped me see the world in a much larger view ~ good and bad. I loved that she was always positive, always looking ahead, always sure that everything would be okay. In a world that can be scary, unsure, and negative, Gwen was a light, soothed fear, brought security, and instilled confidence. She will be greatly missed by everyone. Take care of each other.
To Gwen’s families We would like to express our deeply felt sympathy at this time. We are residents of Cherrywood & have enjoyed knowing & visiting with Gwen these past few years. Our “coffee group” will certainly feel the loss once we are able to return to gathering in the mornings. We will miss her smile and great sense of humor, along with her interesting knowledge about so many things. Know that we are thinking of all of you & also Gwen Johnson’s family.
I had her for Chemistry in ‘94. Truly one of my favorite teachers. Thoughts to her family.
Gwen examplifies what it means to be a life long learner. I met her as she invited Rebecca Otto to Cherrywood for a listening session. Her enthusiam to empower women to achieve in this world was evident. She inspired me to believe we can continue to learn and love life even after our paid careers end.
Peace to all. Blessed to be a friend of Gwen’s the the last decade of her amazing life. She was so encouraging to me in my mission work in Haiti and in my life as a follower of Jesus. What an incredible legacy. “Ain’t I a woman” indeed.
Such a lovely person with a huge heart. She was such a good friend to Shirley and Jack Conley. I loved visiting with her, seeing her at all the concerts and especially at Faith. I am so sorry for your loss.
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of one of my very favorite teachers! I will forever remember “Ms. Hanson” for her huge smile, her generosity, her passion, her intelligence, her faith, and her strength. She was for me a true example of “girl power”! I am so thankful for all that she taught me. My deepest sympathy to her children, for whom I used to babysit. I am sending you all warm thoughts and prayers as you grieve the loss of your mother.
I did not know Gwen personally, but her name never failed to pop up as I worked on various FL school district projects over the years. She was always a leader in organizing support for our schools. Her dedication is truly appreciated by many.
I had Mrs. Hansen as a chemistry teacher in 1984 and remember her taking a small group of us students on a field trip to St. Olaf College where we experienced a world renowned speaker in the field of chemistry. Her love of teaching was evident in the classroom and allowed me to love to learn. I am amazed at all the things she did in her life to make this world a better place for others, but not surprised. – Dan Pillar
You were a wonderful friend Gwen. I miss you! Donna Stottler
Many memories of our dear friend, Gwen, from our days of teaching together at Forest Lake High. Love and blessings to Jeff, Joel, and Jessica.
Ms Hanson was one of my favorite teachers! She was so passionate in her teaching and so encouraging! I remember having her for chemistry. We had just taken a test .. I believe it was the final exam. Later that evening I was in Setterholm’s grocery shopping with my Mom and Miss Hanson approached me in the store. She was so excited, she was just beaming. She said I just can’t wait to tell you, you did so well on your final exam! I remember telling my mom she’s got to have me confused with somebody else. Sure enough I had aced that exam. Mrs. Hanson was the reason I went into healthcare. Sending heartfelt condolences to your family!
Mrs. Hansen was my Chemistry teacher and I took a Fine Arts class from Mr. Hansen. One Christmas they had us come to their house for caroling at the 🎹 piano 🎼🎶. Always so generously community minded. May they rest in 🕊️ peace. Wishing you peace as well, Debbie (Brisson) Van Sloun
