February 28, 1993 ~ October 1, 2024

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Derek Robert Olsen on October 1st, 2024. Born on February 28, 1993. Derek entered this world with a gentle soul and a kind heart. He became a compassionate individual who was known for his quick wit, unique perspective, and laid-back demeanor. Cherishing his memory are his father, Danny Killpack and his sister Felicia Killpack. He leaves behind his precious daughter, Bailey. He also leaves behind his Aunt Cynthia Kerkow, cousins Jaci and Jake, Uncle George Johnson, cousins Adam, Tony and Forrest, Uncle Joseph Johnson (wife Tina), cousin Detlaf, Aunt Kelly Johnson and cousin Danielle Killpack. Preceding him in death were his grandparents Dan and Janet Killpack, uncle Eddy Killpack, and aunt Jessica Johnson. Derek is also survived by his sister Brooke Olsen, Aunt Pamela Olsen, Uncles Kelly Olsen and Christin Max Olsen (wife Candis), as well as cousins Max, Blake, Melissa. Brian Jewell, cousins Holly, Heidi, and Katie. Preceding him in death were his grandparents Max and Judith Olsen, his mother Jennifer Olsen, and Aunts Kimberly Olsen and Cindy Jewell. Derek lived his life with an appreciation for simple pleasures. Whether it was adventuring outdoors with a metal detector or searching for hidden gems in thrift shops. A scary movie, a game of chess or any other games for the purpose of being challenged together. As a teenager, he enjoyed cruising in his golf cart around his neighborhood, often in reverse as skillfully as he drove forward. Derek had a love for animals, enjoyed fishing, nature walks, discovering music, and then sharing with family and friends. As a brother, Derek embodied connection, mischief, and loyalty. He took his role as a Big Brother to heart, checking in with his sisters throughout life’s ups and downs, sharing laughter and knowledge. Though his absence leaves a space that can never be filled, his sisters find comfort in the bond they shared, the memories of joy, and the unconditional love that will live on. Derek’s light, though no longer with us, will continue to shine through the lives he touched. His kind, child-like spirit and desire for connection reminds us to value the bonds of family and friendship. He will be profoundly missed, but his legacy of being yourself will guide us always. We will be holding a memorial gathering to honor Derek from 12-3 PM on Sunday November 10th at Tailgaters in North Branch, MN. Please feel free to join and reminisce in our favorite memories of him.
