Calvin Lee Winbush

August 26, 1943 ~ December 15, 2025

Age 82 of Lino Lakes.

A loving husband, dad, and grandpa, Calvin went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 15, 2025. Cal was preceded in death by parents, Ernest and Luzell Winbush; siblings, Ernestine McCorvey and MacArthur Winbush. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 ½ years, Barbara; sons, Marcus (Karen), Lee (Miranda); grandchildren, Taylor (Blair), Jaik, Ethan, Annie, Joseph, Maddy, Lydia; nieces, nephews, and other loved ones.

Raised in a hardworking family in Mobile, Alabama, Cal learned early the values of faith, perseverance, integrity, and service that would guide his life and career. Encouraged by a cousin to pursue higher education, he enrolled at Alabama State University (ASU) in 1961, beginning his studies at Mobile Junior College. He became the first in his family to graduate from college, earning a Bachelor of Science in English from ASU in 1965, a milestone that marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to education and student development.

Following graduation, Cal began his professional career as an English teacher in Vidalia, Georgia, and later taught in Newnan, Georgia. On June 11, 1966, he married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Paschal, beginning a devoted partnership that would span nearly 60 years.

In 1968, Cal and Barb moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where Barb accepted a position with IBM. Cal soon began working with clients at Rochester State Hospital. He continued his education, earning a master’s degree in counselor education from Winona State University (WSU) in 1972.

The couple returned to Alabama in 1972 when Cal joined Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), as Vice President for Student Life and Development. In 1978 Minnesota called them back, and Cal joined the staff at WSU. Over the years, he advanced through multiple leadership roles, including Dean of Students and Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. Except for a five-year stint at IBM, Cal devoted the remainder of his professional life to WSU, ultimately retiring in 2006 as Vice President Emeritus for Student Affairs and Facilities.

Cal’s impact on students, colleagues, and the university was profound and enduring. In 2007, his contributions were formally recognized when a conference room was named in his honor and a Living History video highlighting his life and career was created. Beyond the university, Cal served on several boards in Rochester and Winona that were focused on cultural diversity and expanding opportunity for others.

A man of deep and abiding faith, Calvin came to faith in Christ at an early age, and he continued to grow in his spiritual walk throughout his life. He served faithfully at First Baptist Church in Rochester, Minnesota (now Autumn Ridge) and Pleasant Valley Church in Winona. After moving to the Twin Cities in 2011, he became a member of The North Church in Mounds View where he participated in the life of the church as much as his health allowed; he also completed several studies with Bible Study Fellowship.

He was deeply loved by his family, friends, faith community, and colleagues; he will be remembered for his wisdom, kindness, leadership, and unwavering commitment to serving others. Cal leaves behind a legacy of faith, education, and service that will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.

Calvin’s life will be celebrated with a service at 11 AM Saturday, January 10th with visitation beginning at 10 AM at the North Church, 5151 Program Ave, St Paul, MN 55112. Please enter the church through door A. A luncheon will follow the service.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Cal was a leader and dear friend to us. His positive impact on our lives meant a lot while we were newly married, young family and working at IBM and serving the community in Rochester Mn. We learned a lot of leadership skills under his lines in Amway too.

  2. We are so sorry for your loss. We have known Calvin for many years and he was dear to us. It was a blessing to see him at our Rochester Reunion this past August. He surely will be deeply missed. Praying for the family during these most difficult times.

  3. My heart is heavy. I met Calvin and Barbara at IBM Rochester, MN in the 70’s. They were my extended family. My parents back in North Carolina could rest at night because of the Winbush family. At times, Calvin played the roles of my father, counselor, and always my friend. He was always there for me. I was grateful to remind Calvin of his kindness 45 years ago at the 2025 Rochester Virtual Reunion. Peace be with Barbara and Family. Love, Donald

  4. My prayers go out to Calvin’s family. I’ll miss him also as his family and friends will also. Barbra stay strong and dwell on all the memories that you had together. God bless.

  5. “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:26-28

Our Deepest Condolences to the Winbush family! Sending blessings of comfort and peace. – Rose, Roslyn & Adam (Rochester, MN Friends)

  6. Winbush Family,

Thank you for adopting us as your own. When we give thanks, we think of you, your generous display of Godly love and, your willingness to nurture us as newlyweds. In Christ, Amen.

  7. My condolences to Barbara and the Winbush family. Calvin was a remarkable person who exhibited kindness and a willingness to help those in need. God enlarged his territory and now called him home to rest. Rest in peace Calvin.

  8. We have sweet memories of Cal and Barb leading our small group in Winona several years ago. We loved to hear Calvin’s laugh! And be recipients of their love and compassion! They were both such leaders in our community serving on boards while demonstrating servant leadership! Barb, Marcus & Lee, we are praying for each one of you, and your family members, as you celebrate Calvin’s life!

  9. My condolences to Barbara and family. It was years ago that I worked with Calvin at IBM in Rochester and for a bit while he was at Winona State. Always upbeat, encouraging, and as many have said, such a big and warm smile. Rest in Heavenly Peace dear Calvin.

  10. We have very fond memories of Cal and Barb while at Winona and Pleasant Valley. They served in so many different ways including helping with the small group ministry. Based on conversations we know he cared deeply about the students at Winona State. God’s grace and peace to Barb.
