Andrew Michael Scierka

August 31, 1932 ~ February 16, 2025
Our beloved father, Andrew Michael Scierka, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2025. The Oil City Class of 1950 described him as “happy and gay, a friend in every way.” He truly lived his 92 years this way. He died peacefully at Our Lady of Peace Hospice “having giving us absolutely everything”. He was born August 31, 1932 in Oil City to the late Andrew J and Barbara (Gust) Scierka. He had six siblings who preceded him in death: Valerie (John) Kowal, Stella (Marion) Truscott, Peter (Mary Louise) Scierka, Frank (Patricia) Scierka, John Scierka, and Mary (Paul) Hodges. Andy met the love of his life, Nancy Sumosky, at the original Sears store in Oil City. They were married August 3, 1957. Dancing was always a part of their lives. She preceded him in death in 2023. He was very proud of his Catholic and Polish heritage.
Andy is survived by his 5 children: Kathy (Bruce) Hermansen, Barbara Scierka, Mary Jane “Jane” Scierka, Michael Scierka, and Andrew J. (Stephanie) Scierka. Andy and his wife, Nancy, moved to Minnesota to be closer to their 3 grandchildren: Andy Hermansen, Kirby Hermansen, and Lauren Scierka. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Andy loved golfing, he had a hole-in-one at the downhill par 3 at Hi-Level golf course and loved walking the Master’s course in Augusta. He loved teaching golf to his children and grandchildren. He was known as “Two Foot Scierka” because he knew the importance of getting close for an easy putt.
Andy was very handy and taught his children how to do many at-home projects. He was known to help everyone and anyone in town when plumbing and heating went awry. Andy loved cooking for his family: pierogies, golabkis, and cowboy dinners. His family loves to keep his phrase alive: “Do you wanna know how to make that better?” He always left people and places better than he found them.
Andy loved vacationing with his family, especially in Avalon, NJ and south in the winter for golfing. He travelled across the country. At Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon he said, “I never thought I’d get to see these places.” As a child of the depression, he never thought he’d get the opportunity. He was very grateful that he did. When he arrived at Yosemite he said, “We’re going to be here awhile,” just amazed by the scenery.
So in honor of Andy: take the time to enjoy the scenery, help those around you and never be afraid to live your life to the fullest! He did!
There will be a celebration of life in the coming months in Oil City.
The family requests that anyone wishing to honor Andy make a donation in his name to Our Lady of Peace Hospice at 2076 St. Anthony Avenue, St. Paul, MN, 55104.
My family and I are so sorry to hear this news about Uncle Andy. Thoughts and prayers to his entire family as we know the pain and sorrow of losing someone so loved.
My best memories of Uncle Andy were on the golf course. Most times Uncle Andy, brother Joe and I would play together and at the end of the round, I was left wondering how this guy 25 years older than me would always win. But the Best Memory was inviting Uncle Andy and Aunt Nancy down to Augusta to the Masters. After walking the course with Uncle Andy, I left those two to enjoy the beauty of the course. He kept telling me , “I can’t believe I’m at the Masters” as we made our way around the course.
Just so many great memories about my Godfather.

One my favorite memories of Mr. Scierka was when he would drive us to the high school dances. When he dropped us off, he would yell out the window … look out boys the girls are here! Rest in peace Mr. Scierka ❤️

Sending prayers for the entire Scierka family. Mr. Scierka was always so funny as he drove Barb and I to VC Chorale practice, basketball games, Advanced History and so many events. No matter how horrid the weather was, he managed to get through snow and ice for we girls. And when he would drop me off at my house, he wouldn’t leave until he saw a light flick on and off as a signal that I was safe. What a sweet, kind, funny fella. He made our world all the brighter by being in it. God Bless.
RIP Andy, you will be missed by your friends here at Amira Choice Forest Lake. I loved your smile and your laughter was contagious, I will always remember you even when I am trying to fix my TV at home.. Our sincere condolences to the Scierka family.
Our hearts go out to you during this time of loss. Uncle Andy was our go-to guy back in Oil City for home repairs—especially heating and plumbing after our dad had a stroke. He’d show up with a smile, crack a joke, and somehow make fixing things look easy. We could always count on him, and he never complained (well, maybe a little when we had tried to repair it ourselves before he got there!). He was the sweetest guy—always kind, always patient, and there when we needed him. We’ll miss his laughter, his skills, and his big heart.
With peace and love,
Rose Wooten
