Thomas W. Reed "Coach"

thomas reed

March 21, 1943 ~ December 23, 2020

Age 77 of Forest Lake. Loving dad & grandpa “bumpa” passed away peacefully on December 23, 2020. Preceded in death by parents, Donald & Beatrice; wife, Karen; son, Barry; sister, Sandy Matsch. Survived by daughters, Joey (Mark) Strong, Stephanie, Brenda (Jeff) Kari; daughter-in-law, Peggy Reed; grandchildren, Berkeley, Max, Sam, Tommy, Kennedy; siblings, Gary (Lois), Becky (Dave) Martin; nieces, nephews, other relatives & friends. Tom grew up in Taylor's Falls where he met and later married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Karen Bonderson. Together they went on to have four children and five grandchildren. Tom went to Hamline University, where he was captain of the football team and earned a degree in education. After college he landed a job in the White Bear Lake school district, as a phy-ed and math teacher, where he also coached football. In the summers Tom ran a construction business, where he focused on masonry work. Between raising four kids, teaching school, and working construction, Tom always managed to find time for fun. Tom enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hunting, bonfires, but most importantly spending time with family and friends. He loved his sports, both playing and watching (especially the Vikings and nascar). He never missed his kids or grandkids sporting events, until later when health conditions interfered. After retirement Tom became an active member of the Columbus Lions. He loved volunteering his time for this club and all the good work they provided to the community. Tom moved into Waverly Gardens in 2017, where he became known as “coach”. It didn’t take long for Tom to establish friendships. He adored the staff there, and they took very good care of him. Anyone who knew Tom, knew what a generous, kind and fun-loving man he was. He had a sense of humor like no other and loved to make people laugh. His smile was infectious. Covid served him no good, as Tom was a “hugger” and very affectionate. Over the years Tom had developed many great relationships. He will be sorely missed by all who had the opportunity to know him. Gather with Tom’s family to celebrate his life with the Vikings game on from 12-3 PM Sunday, January 3rd at Roberts Family Funeral Home, Forest Lake. Vikings attire encouraged. Memorials preferred to the Columbus Lions Club.

  1. Sorry for your loss. Loved all the times we went to Hodag with both Tom and Karen! We had some wild and crazy times! Loved those two so much! 🥰

  2. We are so sorry for your loss! We loved Tom and your Mom both. We knew them many years from Crossroads and then Linwood Covenant Church. When Karen died, we understood how hard it was for Tom to come & be in church with us without Karen. None of us know how we are going to feel or act if or when our own spouses or other loved ones die before we do. May our Lord comfort you all during this difficult time.

  3. Tom did our driveway we worked at Central Jr High I was cook there and he told me he was in concrete business too he came over with his crew and I thought I stay out of there way so I went on deck put the umbrella up and a wind came up and the umbrella went over the roof and just missed the crew and concrete that was close one and the laugh for the day he never let me forget it .We had some nice visits at the nursing home. He will be missed. Den andJoan

  4. Tommy was an amazing man, always there for his friends and family. I have so many great memories of camping, tubing, Hodag and lots of special times. Both him and Karen will be forever missed and always loved!!

  5. I taught and coached football with Tom in the seventies. I can honestly say I never met a better teacher than Tom. He never had problems in his class and his students just loved him. I learned so much about teaching and life from Tom. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. Ed Almekinder

  6. Tom was the absolute best colleague to teach with. Generations of students loved Mr. Reed and it was inspiring to watch him work with all kids. The Physical Education teams at Central and in White Bear Lake have broken hearts and will miss Tom. Dave & Patti Percival
