- Roberts Family to support Forest Lake Area Sports Complex
- Everyone in our family is excited about the new Forest Lake Sports Complex, because this will be a community facility we can truly be proud of and it will pay dividends to thousands of families for decades to come.
While the Forest Lake Area Athletic Association (FLAAA) is building the facility, the school district will also use it for high school hockey, residents can use it for open skating or field time, we can finally have some adult sports leagues in town, and local organizations can use the meeting room. This will truly be a community facility.
We’re especially excited about the opportunities it opens up to area youth. We all have great memories of when the three boys—Blake, Corey and Kelly—participated in Forest Lake baseball, football and hockey. Reflecting back on those years, it’s not the wins and losses that stand out, but the camaraderie and friendships we all enjoyed—both as participants and spectators.
Competing in youth activities taught many positive life lessons: teamwork, commitment, discipline, leadership, hard work and perseverance. Those qualities become a way of life for young athletes, and they helped our family build two successful businesses in town. Now we have a new generation of Roberts, and we look forward to seeing them grow and develop through sports activities.
This new Sports Complex is more than impressive bricks and mortar. It will be a foundation for a stronger local community. It will bring more visitors to shop local businesses, help attract new businesses that want local amenities for their employees, and can be a springboard for filling new homes in the Headwaters development. The long-term benefits will have a ripple effect that will make Forest Lake a better place to live and visit for years to come.
The decision for our family to financially support the new Forest Lake Sports Complex was simple: It was the desire to help improve the community that has supported our family over the past 78 years.
Let’s all help take Forest Lake to the next level by making a donation to the Sports Complex. We look forward to seeing you at groundbreaking.

- Helping students make positive choices
- More than 2,000 students die in the U.S. each year from alcohol related crashes. Roberts Family Funeral Home has developed at Forest Lake High School to help prevent that number from growing in the Forest Lake Area. The Positive Choices program combines information, technology and incentives to encourage students to make positive, life saving choices about alcohol use and driving. Students participate in the Positive Choices program by logging on to a website: www.positive-choices.org. There, they learn the facts about drinking and driving. They can also experience through an online simulation how quickly a driver can lose control when he or she is encouraged to sign the "Positive Promise," stating that he or she will remain alcohol and drug free. Two Forest Lake High School seniors, Kara Eggers and Christina Slowinski, have been awarded a $500.00 college scholarship sponsored by Roberts Family Funeral Home and SADD for helping promote the program. To reward students for signing and keeping the Positive Promise, the website is awarding five $500.00 college schloarships nationally. Every student who signs the online promise is entered in the scholarship contest. If a parent also signs the online pledge, that student's name is entered twice. Scholarships will awarded through a random drawing in May. "This is an important issue for our community," says Tim Tarmann. "If we can help make a difference for one student to make a positive choice when it comes to alcohol and driving, the program is successful."
